Overview

Take ownership of your digital materials using open infrastructure and international standards

Research assets are more complex but more vulnerable than ever: scattered across institutional IT systems and portable devices; dependent on short-term funding for maintenance, and increasingly hostage to third-party platforms whose priorities are not yours. Often, visual materials that your work depends on are not supported by emerging standards such as the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF).

annostor is a new kind of research data service. It helps individual scholars and institutions manage, enrich, share, publish, and preserve heterogeneous digital materials—from pictures, documents and metadata to high-resolution digitised sources—using open standards and secure access controls.

Use existing IIIF manifests, or have annostor generate new IIIF resources; create unlimited WADM annotations and persistent identifiers—including DOI and Handle, and use ORCID to identify your outputs. With DataCite metadata support, flexible repository deposit and egress options, annostor makes your digital research material easier to enrich and safeguard for the future—you decide where it is stored, who can access it, and how it is preserved in the long-term.

Losing research data when projects end?

Build resilient, standards-based repository records.

Your research material rarely lives in one place and employs multiple representations. Field observations, images, videos, PDFs, annotations, documents, notes, and collections of source materials are challenging to manage—and even harder to preserve, publish, or share with confidence in the increasingly complex and hostile internet environment.

annostor gives you a secure, standards-based environment to bring these materials together, create and manage metadata and annotations—and to generate interoperable outputs that remain findable and accessible beyond project lifetimes and individuals' careers.

  • Secure intermediate storage for managing research data—all in one place—until you are ready to publish in repositories.
  • Preserve intermediate data, which may not be published, but essential for independent verification and valuable for other researchers.
  • Share research securely with others and manage collaborators via ORCID-based access controls.
  • Mint PIDs and deposit in private as well as open repositories—within a single workflow—no waiting or administrative delays.
  • Standards-based egress options to move your data elsewhere—any time—or replicate it near-line for high resilience.

Research data management for the long run

Escape project funding cycles and proprietary technologies

Independent research organisations, universities, libraries, archives and museums make significant investments digitising their collections. However, digital infrastructures based on proprietary software platforms seldom provide state-of-the-art functionality for researchers, and have also become increasingly subject to attack. And when IT is updated or institutions restructured or lose funding, data services and research outputs are rapidly compromised.

annostor is a new research data platform built for institutions that take a longer view. It is data sovereignty-oriented, employing InvenioRDM—the same repository software platform as Zenodo, which is now maintained by major public organisations globally. However, institutions don't need to convert their infrastructure to Invenio: annostor complements your existing data services, so upgrading research processes doesn't mean disruption.

  • Rapidly convert digitisation investment into advanced IIIF data services for researchers.
  • Provide DataCite-based metadata serialisations plus extensions such as DarwinCore with APIs including OAIS-PMH.
  • Promote digital scholarship through WADM annotation and ORCID identification of outputs.
  • European-hosted, no third-party storage, to meet the strictest data governance requirements.
  • Transparent egress: multiple exit strategies with choice of formats and delivery.
